Welcome! This world needs more Protector Grand – Elders like you, especially now.
You know how the world feels upside down and the littles you love like crazy are struggling and you’re not sure how to help in ways that are real for you?
It’s always been hard to be a kid, finding your way in the world. It’s gotten considerably more complicated in this world. That’s where you come in.
You are, instinctively, the keeper of traditions. The collector of family keepsakes. And there is more than a bit of the Mama Bear deep inside you!
Your instinct is to shelter your dearest ones from danger – also perceived as change – and keep them safe. Along the way you learned, from the Protectors who came before you, that it feels safer to count on things we’ve survived before than to break the patterns we learned at their knees.
This makes total sense!
It’s also true that… change happens, whether we choose for it to or not, which means we may need some new strategies as well. And the reality is that if we want to be close to our littles, we need to at least be able to visit the world where they’re growing up.
So, bake the same holiday cookies your grandmother baked. Make them quilts. Read them Little House on the Prairie. And Harry Potter… who once was new! Let them explore the family photos and artifacts that add so many stories to your home.
Then….
… let them teach you a video game. Or cheer when they play.
And, maybe, just maybe, learn to FaceTime – or whatever yours will happily teach you if you ask – especially if they’re far away!
You might even use cyber moments like those to tell what my little one, Taylor, used to call stories from your mouff, Grammy… the family kind you probably learned from your Grand-Elders when you were small.
It can feel scary, yet they are so blessed to have you on their side, because they need to be able to deal with change, too.
Perhaps our biggest fear is that we won’t fit in. Won’t know how to be close. If our world is teaching us anything, it’s that Love is the tradition that matters most. And, if we’re going to help them feel safe, together we can find new ways of being present.
You are a Protector Grandmother. Thank goodness!
Recently, I wrote a Grandmothers’ Manifesta. A friend asked me how long it took.
My answer was simple. Thirty-five years and 10 minutes! Which is to say, it’s a path. A path of passionate hope, even on the hard days. A path to empowering our families and our world. I’m so glad you’re on the road, too.
For much of those 35 years, I was making my way from life as a poor, scared single mom, turned professional student, all the way to a whole lot of diplomas in the basement and some really helpful learning. Among the useful things… years and years as a pastoral counselor putting that learning to use. I’m a certified leader of Developing Capable People, a certified Intentional Creativity® Teacher & Coach, and the author of three Grammy friendly Amazon bestselling books.
My life was transformed when I became a Grammy! So much so that, these days, I help wise Grand-Elders like you discover and claim your special archetypal gifts for empowering yourself and the ones you love the most to survive and thrive. Art and creativity are often involved!
